Nicolas Colque left home at the age of 14
with many dreams and B$100 ($14) in his
pocket to start a new and a better life. He
moved to Alto Beni, where he began working
and was able to save enough money to buy a
small lot to work. However, he never
abandoned his desire to continue with his
education, he later completed high school
and he is currently studying accounting. In
1999, he bought 6 acres in Carrasco La
Reserva, and decided to grow coffee since
coffee had a good price. This young grower
decided to participate in the Cup of
Excellence in 2007. Although he didn’t do
well, he continued to participate again in
2008 and made it to the National Winners
level, where he obtained 34th place, 5 short
to Cup of Excellence. Nicolas is happy with
the result and says: "My goal in the 2009
competition will be to win the first place.
Last year my dream was to reach to the
National Auction, and that dream has being
fulfilled, this year is be one of the
winners”.
Nicolas admits that he had problems in
growing specialty coffee, but he was able to
overcome them "My greatest difficulty has
been that it is a different process. Before
we used to cut the trees, and burn all the
organic material, and the micro organisms on
the soil. Once we adopted organic
management, without burning trees, we
started managing the shade by thinning and
planting new forest trees. Now we know and
have seen the performance of the coffee
production.
Nicolas will improve his production with the
money received at the National Auction, "we
are failing in the drying, we need Agro film.
It always rains and we are at an altitude of
1500 to 1800 meters above sea level and we
loose our harvest. We want to implement
agro film in order to have quality coffee. "
Nicolas, in the name of his organization (ACEPA),
wants to tell coffee buyers: "We offer high
quality coffee, 95% Typica and 5% Caturra,
and that is the most appropriate since it
has more flavor and body."
